Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli is one of my favorite books because it tells the story of a girl who does things on her own terms. Although she appears a bit strange, sporting her 1920s flapper dresses and ukulele, she is incredibly compassionate and quickly wins the hearts of her peers. Whenever someone needs a helping hand, Stargirl is there to provide a shoulder to cry on or a random gift to cheer them. By the end of the novel, she has touched so many lives that she inspires even the reader. Amanda’s great-grandfather, William DeCoursey, is a retiree who served Lifetouch for many years.
